Paul Miller's Law

📢 ATTENTION DRIVERS: Paul Miller's Law Takes Effect Tomorrow! 📢

South Lebanon Township, PA – The South Lebanon Township Police Department is reminding all motorists that Paul Miller's Law, a new state-wide regulation aimed at preventing distracted driving, will go into effect tomorrow, Thursday, June 5, 2025.

This important legislation, named in memory of Paul Miller Jr., who was tragically killed by a distracted driver, prohibits the use of hand-held cell phones and other interactive mobile devices while operating a motor vehicle. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Making phone calls (unless using a hands-free system)
  • Sending or reading text messages
  • Emailing
  • Using social media
  • Browse the internet
  • Playing games
  • Taking photos or videos

Key things to know about Paul Miller's Law:

  • Hands-Free is Still Allowed: You may still use your device if it is equipped with and being used in a hands-free manner (e.g., Bluetooth, speakerphone, or a dashboard mount).
  • Includes Temporary Stops: The law applies even when you are temporarily stopped at a traffic light, stop sign, or in a traffic jam.
  • Emergency Exceptions: Use of a hand-held device is permitted to contact emergency services (911) or in situations to prevent injury to persons or property.
  • Grace Period for Citations: For the first 12 months, law enforcement officers will issue written warnings for violations. Starting June 5, 2026, officers will begin issuing citations, which carry a fine of $50.

The South Lebanon Township Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of our roadways. Distracted driving is a serious and preventable cause of accidents, injuries, and fatalities. We urge all drivers to familiarize themselves with Paul Miller's Law and to make the conscious decision to put their phones down and focus on driving.

Let's work together to make our roads safer for everyone.
