The North Lebanon Township Police Department was created in 1948, with Clarence Darkes serving as the Chief of Police and sole officer. In 1950, a second officer was added to the force, with a third officer added in 1958.
North Lebanon Township Police officers currently provide services to North Lebanon Township, as well as contracted police service to neighboring West Lebanon Township. The coverage area encompasses 16.8 square miles, with a population of 12,041 residents as of the 2020 Census. This area includes shopping centers, industrial complexes, residential areas, housing complexes, State routes 72, 422, and 343. The department consisted of 12 Police Officers.
The North Cornwall Township Police Department was created in 1957, with the appointment of Warren Young as Chief of Police. The North Cornwall Township Police Officers coverage area encompasses 9.5 square miles, with a population of 8,511 residents as of the 2020 Census. This area includes shopping centers, industrial complexes, residential areas, housing complexes, and State routes 72,422, and 241. The Department consisted of 11 Police Officers.
In July of 2023, North Lebanon Township and North Cornwall Township agreed to have a Police regionalization study conducted by the Department of Community and Economic Development to determine if joining forces would be financially fiscal. In July of 2024, an official charter was signed to regionalize the two Police agencies to form the Lebanon County Regional Police Department.
The North Lebanon and North Cornwall Township Board of Supervisors created a five-member board of Commissioners to govern the Lebanon County Regional Police Department. The board of Commissioners appointed Chief Timothy Knight to serve as the first Chief of Police overseeing the Lebanon County Regional Police Department.
The Lebanon County Regional Police Department will provide Police services to residents of North Lebanon Township, North Cornwall Township, and contracted services to neighboring West Lebanon Township. The department officially started on January 1, 2025. The combined coverage will consist of 26.7 square miles, with a population of approximately 21,500 residents.
