Accident involving Child

Details Map

There has been a recent and incomplete report in the media regarding a child being struck by a vehicle on 4/4/2021 at approx. 1757hrs.  In an effort to be more clear and transparent, the Palmyra Police Department would like to provide the following information to present a fuller picture to the public.

On April 4, 2021, the Palmyra Police Department was detailed to a 911 hang up call at Railroad and Main St reporting that a child had been hit by a vehicle.  As an officer was responding, the caller then stated that no police were needed.  The responding officer continued and arrived on location.

On arrival, the officer found no signs of an accident and no one in the area.

Later, at 1815hrs, the Palmyra Police Department received a call from a female about her child being struck by a vehicle.  The officer responded to their address and spoke to the mother and child.  The officer also requested EMS respond to check on the child.

The officer next conducted follow-up through Lebanon County Dispatch and was able to identify and speak with 3 witnesses. All three stated that from their view point the driver did not see the child as they came into the intersection and the child was struck.

The driver of the vehicle and the witness stopped and offered assistance to the child.  The child said several times to all present that he felt ok and then left the scene.

The responding officer subsequently conducted a walking detail in the area of Railroad and Main and was not able to locate any cameras on the buildings that may have captured the incident.

There have been several comments about checking the cameras that are on the traffic lights.  Those are not cameras.  They are monitors for traffic and do not record.

In addition the recent article failed to report that at this time the investigation is not closed but has been tabled due to lack of leads.  Should additional information or witnesses come forward the department will follow up immediately.
